As members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, we are honored to commemorate National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. For America, it is a day that stands as a symbol of our sacrifice, courage, and the indominable spirit of our great nation.
82 years ago, December 7, 1941, was a morning that changed our nation forever. Japan’s surprise attack was a brutal and devastating event that thrust our nation into the throes of World War Two.
The lives lost, ships destroyed, and the planes shot out of the sky in those few hours will forever be etched into the pages of our history. The attack on Pearl Harbor shook our nation to its core, but from the smoldering ashes and destruction arose a sleeping giant with a renewed sense of purpose.
As combat veterans, we understand the importance of remembering and paying tribute to those who were at Pearl Harbor that fateful day, and honoring all the veterans who served in World War Two. Even 82 years later, we must continue to carry the torch of their memory, ensuring that their brave service and sacrifices are not forgotten. We owe it to them to remember their heroic actions; despite the chaos and fear, they chose to rise up and defend their home.
Pearl Harbor’s significance extends far beyond the pages of history books; it serves as a timeless reminder of America’s tenacity and enduring spirit. Even when staring fear, shock, and adversity in the face; our nation did not falter. Instead, we stood united. We rebuilt, and emerged a stronger, more unified nation. It is important to remember that National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day represents not only a tragic event in our past, but more importantly it is a symbol of hope, resilience, and our unwavering patriotism.
As veterans and citizens of this great nation, it is our duty to keep the memory and history of what happened at Pearl Harbor alive for future generations. Through the stories of those who lived through that harrowing day, we can inspire our youth to recognize and appreciate the freedoms and liberties we enjoy today, as well as the high price paid to secure them.
Today, as we reflect on the events of December 7, 1941, we encourage each of you to also take a moment to consider the lessons Pearl Harbor taught us about the importance of preparedness, vigilance, diplomacy, but most of all, unity. It’s a responsibility we carry not just for ourselves, but for the generations yet to come.
Thank you all for commemorating this important occasion, and may we go forth today with a renewed sense of purpose, patriotism, and the inspiration to keep alive the memory of those who died at Pearl Harbor, forever more.
