National Girls & Women in Sports Day

Today is National Girls & Women in Sports Day. It began in 1987 as a remembrance of Flo Hyman, an Olympic volleyball player, for her athletic achievements. Unfortunately, she died in 1986 of Marfan’s Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissues. It has since evolved into an event acknowledging the accomplishments of girls and women in sports, the positive impact of participation, and the continuing equality for women in sports.

The greater Saint Louis area is proud to call Jackie Joyner-Kersee their own. Becky Sauerbrunn was born in Saint Louis and played on the United States National Soccer Team. She was co-captain from 2016 to 2018 and team captain from 2021 to 2023.
